Cockpit heat
A 'Chilly tale'
Last December my Son and I decided we would like to fly to Memphis. It was below zero (Fahrenheit) and overcast. It was so cold that we got as far as Chicago and we couldn't stand it any longer. That's when I decided I had to do something!!
I copied Dave Anderson's ideas and it has been quite successful. The photographs should give you a pretty good idea on how I modified the heat exchanger. I took a scat tube and ducted it into the side of the wall on the pilot side. Dave Anderson split his and ran the heat into the top of the wells on the pilot and passenger side. I would have done this but I had already mounted hardware in this area. I operate the flap with a Bowden cable which is under the instrument panel on the pilot's side.
How well does it work? Well it seems to vary with Speed. If I am cruising at 140 knots in the 8,000 to 10,000 range in the dead of winter it enough to take the chill off the air. If am lower and slower it gets quite hot, enough for me to have to close it off a bit.
